Cairns City Tote
Mention the word Cairns and you imagine the Barrier Reef, tropical rainforests or the cool lakes of the tablelands and a relaxed, casual way of life. This city and the surrounding area is a mixture of history, culture and natural attractions that make it difficult to draw a unique interpretation.
The scene along the waterfront is one that many view from cruise boats as they leave or return from excursions to the Barrier Reef. The wharf area was originally developed in the late 1800’s for the purpose of shipping gold, tin and sugar which secured the fortunes of the port. The esplanade along the foreshore has been transformed with a swimming lagoon and grassy picnic areas.
Sides 1 and 2
Trinity Wharf is one of the oldest areas in Cairns and although it has been redeveloped, it still features some historic buildings. Cruises to the reef and islands depart from here every day.
The Reef Casino with its unique glass domed roof features a hotel, restaurants, bars, stunning live stage shows, shopping boutiques and the excitement of a casino. The hotel and its conference rooms are popular for weddings and functions.
The Pier Marketplace, located on the waterfront, is a very popular place to visit for both tourists and locals alike. There are over 100 specialty retailers with a large aquarium and numerous restaurants and cafes. Most visitors to Cairns include a visit to The Pier during their stay. The complex also encompasses the luxurious Radisson Plaza Hotel.
Every day, thousands of people board their reef or fishing charter boats for their trip to the Barrier Reef from the Marlin Marina.
Gussets
The Skyrail cableway travels seven and a half kilometres over World Heritage-listed tropical rainforest between Smithfield and Kuranda. There are two stops along the way as well as time to experience the colourful shops and markets at the top of the range in Kuranda.
The Scenic Railway offers a wonderful trip aboard beautifully preserved, old-fashioned carriages. The train winds its way through magnificent gorges, 15 handmade tunnels and 37 bridges, along precipitous slopes and past crashing waterfalls.
Paronella Park is an amazing attraction is built on 5 hectares of rainforest. Here you discover the dreams of Jose Paronella who started building in 1929. The remains of this castle in the forest has turret-topped balconies, a grand stair case, old areas used as refreshment rooms and changing cubicles, a suspension bridge over the falls with hydro electricity generating plant, swimming and picnic areas and lush tropical gardens which attract many species of birds and butterflies.
