Brisbane City ToteThis scenic capital of Queensland and Australia's third largest city has certainly seen some changes since starting life as a penal settlement, and is now vibrant and prosperous. There is an interesting mix of heritage buildings and compact city high rise, an abundance of recreational space, and a focus around the winding Brisbane River with its impressive bridges that connect north to south. Side 1The cantilever Story Bridge which is 777 metres long spanning the Brisbane River now has another feather in its cap with the added tourist attraction of the Adventure Bridge Climb, and many people viewing the city from the summit, 80 metres above sea level. You can view the Botanical Gardens by hiring a bike, wander along the boardwalk, have a picnic, or enjoy a meal in the garden kiosk. This is the city's oldest park, originally planted by convicts in 1825 with food crops to feed the prison colony. The gardens include ancient trees, rainforest glades and exotic species. The modern towers of glass and steel which make up the CBD
high rise buildings are situated in a curve around the river. The area covers
only 2.2 square kilometres and is easily walkable. The central streets are named
after members of the House of Hanover. Streets named after female members (Adelaide, Alice, Ann, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Margaret, Mary) run parallel to Queen Street and Queen Street Mall (named in honour of Queen Victoria) and perpendicular to streets named after male members (Albert, Edward, George, William). Side 2Parliament House in Brisbane is the seat of the Parliament of Queensland, housing the Legislative Assembly and bordered by the Queensland University of Technology and the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. The George Street frontage was completed in 1868 in French Renaissance style with its roof made of Mount Isa copper. The colonnades were built in 1878 and construction on the Alice Street frontage commenced in 1887. A 22-storey Parliamentary Annex was built during the 1980s within the grounds of the Old Parliament House with a new Legislative Chamber on the 5th floor. Free public guided tours are held in Parliament House. Also, a gift shop, selling souvenirs and memorabilia, is located in the main foyer. In the 1890s and early 1900s the imposing Treasury Building served as a symbol of self-government. The building was erected in three stages between 1886 and 1928. The architectural style can be compared to that of the 16th century Italian architecture. It has an accomplished design, detailing both exterior and interior, materials such as sandstone and boasts exquisite workmanship. Compared to modern buildings in the Brisbane CBD it is a jewel of history that should be appreciated. The now Conrad Treasury Casino, is a building full vibrance and entertainment. It is home to two bars, five restaurants, eight function rooms and a gambling casino. GussetsCustoms House is one of Brisbane’s heritage icons. Opened in 1889, it was originally used for the collection of Customs duty. Behind the grand Corinthian columns you will now find an elegant wedding venue, function and board rooms, restaurant and a magnificent ballroom/concert area. The Town Hall is the seat of the City Council of Brisbane. It was not opened until 1930 and the three storey building holds a concert hall and impressive gallery seating and great acoustics. The well known imposing tower is 91.4 metres high and houses the magnificent clock, with faces on each of the four sides of the tower. The clock chimes on the quarter hour reminding people relaxing in the square.
